Cubic Zirconia comes closer than any other material to matching the characteristics of a diamond.  It is often hard to distinguish the difference with the naked eye, but there are  a few technical divergences.

FIRE & BRILLIANCE: CZ has slightly less brilliance (liveliness and sparkle) than diamonds, while having more fire (flashes of rainbow colors).
